Norwegian Research Information Repository
The Norwegian Research Information Repository (Nasjonalt vitenarkiv, NVA) is Norway’s research information system and open, digital research archive. NVA is used to register publications, projects and other research activities; in addition, scholarly publications, master’s theses and PhD theses are made openly accessible in the repository. The system is also used to report data on scholarly publications. NVA replaces Cristin and the institutional repositories, incl. Nord Open Research Archive.
Info September 2025:
The Norwegian Research Information Repository (Nasjonalt vitenarkiv, NVA) replaces the discontinued institutional repositories (incl. Nord Open Research Archive) and the current research information system Cristin. Content from the old systems, incl. student theses, PhD theses, reports etc., has been migrated to NVA. NVA and the instutional respositories have the same purpose: to make publications openly accessible to the public on the internet. The accessibility of those materials also remains the same.
Student theses and PhD theses (for doctorates completed before 2021) are made accessible based on consent. If you wish to withdraw your consent and have your thesis unpublished, please contact Ingrid Nekså (for master's theses) and openaccess@nord.no (for PhD theses), respectively.
NVA makes it easy to meet requirements for Open Access to research results by uploading of full-text (self-archiving).
Nord University’s Open Access policy (PDF) states that all scholarly journal articles in which the university is credited, must be self-archived in NVA. The policy also recommends that master’s theses and scientific book chapters / books are made available in the repository. Furthermore, everyone graduating with a PhD from Nord university is required to make their theses openly available in NVA (see the university’s PhD regulations § 17-3, in Norwegian only).
Reporting of scholarly publications
Institutions in the health, institute and higher education sectors must annually report their publications to NVI (the Norwegian Publication Indicator).
For a publication to be reported to NVI, it has to be registered in NVA. Registered publications are verified and approved before the final report deadline. All authors and affiliations that are stated (credited) in a publication, must be registered. More information on which institution(s) to credit in a publication, is available on our website on author affiliations and crediting.
There is established a national website with information on the Norwegian Publication Indicator (change to English in the upper right-hand corner). Publication channels ranked level 1 or 2 are considered academic in the annual reports and indexed in the channel register of the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir).
Guidance and information about NVA and how to register scholarly publications is available in NVA’s help center.
Researcher's responsibility
According to the "Routine for registration, archiving and reporting of scholarly publications at Nord University", researchers at Nord University themselves are responsible for
- registering their academic publications in NVAn. The publications should be registered continuously, but at the latest by 20 January the following year.
- uploading the correct version of their scholarly journal articles (possibly also their scholarly book chapters) according to Nord University’s Open Access policy (PDF). More information on article versions and on how to upload full-text is available on the self-archiving website. The University Library checks the publishers’ self-archiving policies before making the full-text accessible in NVA.
- by 30 November, submitting channels that they have published in and that are not ranked level 1 or 2, for possible inclusion the channel register of the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir).
For all scholarly publications resulting from research fully or partially funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN), the researchers must register the RCN project number in NVA.
Publishing commitee at Nord University
The publishing committee consists of one representative from each of the five Faculties, an observer from the Research and Development Division and a secretary from the University Library. The publishing committee contributes to the quality assurance of research registration through the ongoing processing of questions of doubt or conflicts concerning the classification of publications as scientific, author addresses, or other issues that can be subject to discussion, among other things.
