Urban Research in small and medium sized urbanities (URBINN)

The multidisciplinary research group URBinN has a thematic focus on urbanization, urban and regional planning and sustainable development.

The multidisciplinary research group URBinN has a thematic focus on urbanization, urban and regional planning and sustainable development of small and medium sized urbanities in a global perspective with an initial focus on Nordic remote areas. The motive for this interest is the somewhat under-researched area of social, spatial, historical and economic processes related to the origin, functioning and planning of smaller urbanities in general. It is based on a long-running seminar series at Nord University focusing on current urban development in a historic perspective mainly starting with the industrial revolution up until today.

Our location in Trøndelag and Nordland regions offers a unique history and local collaboration with municipalities, regions, non-profit organizations, Sami communities and industry. It enables us to study, develop, implement and test models for sustainable multilevel governance/planning and local relations, that ideally are applicable to European settings and beyond.

Currently the research group represent the scientific disciplines Geography, History, Political Science and Law but is open to others.
