The course gives an introduction to the study of biodiversity: measures of biodiversity, spatiotemporal variability patterns in biodiversity, how biodiversity affects ecosystems, how human activity affects biodiversity, and the management of biodiversity. Basic training in phylogeny and systematics of bacteria, archaea, protists, plants, fungi, invertebrates, and vertebrates.

On successful completion of the course:

Knowledge: The student should:

Have basic knowledge about the evolution and current status of biodiversity.
Be able to identify different theories and methods within the study of systematics and phylogeny.
Know basicresearch methods and topics within the field
Know central research within the field of biodiversity

Skills The student should:

Be able to apply scientific knowledge in the study of biodiversity
Be capable of updating their knowledge within the field of biodiversity
Be able to approach problems and make decisions regarding biodiversity based on scientific knowledge

General competence: The student should:

Have insight into relevant issues with in the field of biodiversity
Have basic taxonomic insight of regionally common organisms
Be able to exchange knowledge and viewpoints within the community of the field

No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.

Compulsory: BSc in Biology

Lectures, discussions, seminars, field excusions and lab courses.

The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.

Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.

Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3

To accommodate this, the form of assessment will be changed to home examination (3 Hours) on this course in the spring of 2020.
