Nature types, Climate and Geology

Norwegian nature types are the result of a complex interplay between the physical environment, biological interactions and the history of Norwegian landscapes since the last ice age. Knowing about the Norwegian nature types, their variation and their distribution is fundamental for an effective protection and sustainable management of these nature types.

The course gives an introduction to climate, geological processes, landscape forms and vegetation locally, regionally and globally. The students will learn about holistic relationships between the different topics.

The subject is reserved for the study programme Bachelor's degree in Circular Bioeconomy. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.

Upon completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

Describe how climate affects vegetation at local and regional scales
Explain how vegetation types such as forests, marshes and mountain vegetation are related to important ecological factors such as geology, soil, topography and hydrology
Account for how internal and external geological processes have formed the earth’s landscapes

Skills:

Identify some common types of vegetation in nature
Explain the creation of landscape and topographic features, recognising various examples in the field

General competence:

Use databases and literature to obtain relevant information about geology, climate and vegetation in Norway

No costs except semester registration fee and the cost of the literature on the reading list. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.

Compulsory

Lectures, laboratory exercises and field courses/excursions

The study program is evaluated by the students each semester by means of course and study program surveys. The evaluations are part of Nord University’s quality assurance system for education.

Compound assessement, grading scale Letter grades

Compulsory participation: 2 compulsory excursions , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.

Assignment - individual term paper, comprises 50/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.

School exam, 2 hours, comprises 50/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.

No prior knowledge is required beyond the admission requirement.
