Vegetation, Climate and Geology

BIO1010
The course gives an introduction to climate, geological processes, geomorphology and local, regional and global vegetation.
The subject is reserved for the study programme Nature Management. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.
Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon completion, the student should be able to achieve the following:

Knowledge:

  • describe how climate affects local, regional and global vegetation
  • explain how variation of vegetation types within forests, bogs and mountains are connected to important ecological factors such as geology, soils, topography and hydrology

Skills:

  • identify some common vegetation types in nature
  • explain the creation of landscape and topography
  • use databases and literature for collecting relevant information about geology and vegetation

General competencies:

  • have knowledge of systems used for identifying and mapping vegetation
  • have knowledge of a small selection of species in selected vegetation types
  • explain processes shaping the earths landscapes, and recognize examples of these prosesses in nature
No tuition fees. Semester fees apply.
Compulsory
Lectures, group activities, feedback on assignments, presentations and excursions.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment.

Compulsory participation. Approved/ Not approved. Must be passed prior to the written examination.

Written assessment - individual semester assignment, comprises 50% of the grade, grading scale A-F.

Written examination, 3 hours, comprises 50% of the grade, grading scale A-F.
