Vegetation, Climate and Geology

BIO1010
The course gives an introduction to climate, geological processes, geomorphology and local, regional and global vegetation.

Norwegian nature types are the result of a complex interplay between the physical environment, biological interactions and the history of norwegian landscapes since the last ice age. Knowing about the norwegian nature types, their variation and their distributions is fundamental for their effective protection and sustainable management. In this course we learn some plant species which are important for recognising certain vegetation types, as well as introducing some of the systems for classifying norwegian and global vegetation types.

The subject is reserved for the study programme Nature Management. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.
Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to:

Knowledge:

  • Describe how climate affects vegetation at local, regional and global scales
  • Explain how variation of vegetation types within forests, bogs and mountains are connected to important ecological factors such as geology, soils, topography and hydrology
  • Account for how internal and external geological processes have formed the earth’s landscapes

Skills:

  • Identify some common vegetation types in nature
  • Explain the creation of landscape and topographic features, recognising various examples in the field
  • Recognise approximately 30 species which grow in the selected vegetation types

General competence:

  • Use databases and literature to obtain relevant information about geology, climate and vegetation
  • Show knowledge of systems used for identifying and mapping vegetation in Norway
Utover semesteravgift og pensumlitteratur forutsettes det at studenten disponerer en bærbar datamaskin.
