BIO101
General chemistry:
- the structure of atoms and the structure of the periodic system
- bond conditions, nomenclature and stoichiometri
- water solutions and gases
- acids, bases and buffers, salts and oxids in water
- reduction and oxidation, the voltage range
- organic chemistry, functional groups and nomenclature
Environmental knowledge:
- pollution's effect on biological systems
- key themes like toxins, climate gases, acid rain, petroleum pollution and radioactivity will be highlighted
The subject is reserved for the study programmes Animal Welfare and Animal Sciences - Welfare and Production, Circular Bioeconomy and Nature Management. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.
Admission is based on general competance from studies or specific competance in this area, in line with the relevant regulations.
Upon successful completion of this programme, the student shall:
Knowledge:
- has knowledge of the naming and composition of atoms and molecules
- has knowledge of different kinds of reactions and chemical bonds
- has knowledge related to pollution of soil, air and water
- has an understanding of the effect of toxins on organisms, populations and eco-systems
Skills:
- can apply basic methods and principles in non-organic as well as organic chemistry
- can apply basic skills in practical lab work and lab Security
- can apply and communicate knowledge of basic naming rules for chemical compounds
- can communicate basic knowledge of toxins and other pollution issues
General competence:
- can account for basic chemical terms and principles that form the background for chemical processes taking place in living organisms
- has knowledge of issues related to the pollution of air and water, as well as the effect of toxins on animals, plants and eco-systems
No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.
Compulsory for the Animal Sciences -welfare and production programme and Nature Management. Elective course for Animal Welfare.
Lectures, assignments and lab exercises.
Portfolio assessment:
- Compulsory participation - laboratory courses (4 exercises) (Approved not approved)
- Compulsory work - laboratory courses (4 reports) (Pass/fail)
- Compulsory work (2) - inorganic chemistry test/multiple choice test (Pass/fail)
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
