BIO1024
Good animal health and welfare, human food and water quality are closely connected. The course introduces the students to environmental protection measures in veterinary medicine and the veterinary perspective on public health and one health.
The course provides theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of environmental protection (water, air, soil) from the perspective of a veterinarian.
The lectures include topics on:
- Introduction to animal husbandry and microbial pathogens in food production.
- Disease management on farm, national and international level.
- Evaluation of the quality of water resources and their protection.
- Processing and utilization of organic waste from animal and food production.
The course is only available for students in the programme Joint Bachelor Degree in Animal Science.
The student:
Knowledge
- Has an overview of the main preventive sanitation approaches used in sustainable animal farming and food production and knows how to update their knowledge in this field.
- Has an overview of the evaluation of the quality of the environment (e.g. air and water sources).
- Has an overview of the waste water treatments in animal husbandry.
Skills
- Can understand the main principles regarding prevention of diseases in animal farming.
- Can evaluate different preventive approaches used at various stages of production of food from animals.
General competence
- Can participate in scientific discussions related to disease prevention, promoting good practice.
- Can apply theoretical knowledge for the solution of practical problems.
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Theory
Compulsory
Lectures online and on campus. Exercises.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the national quality surveys.
Compound assessment:
Written school exam (SK): 100 % of the grade. Duration: 3 hours. A-F.
Laptop, pen, ruler, and simple calculator.
Generating an answer using artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as your own work is considered cheating.
