The central content of the course is to provide an overview of Norwegian vertebrates. The subject places particular emphasis on the bird fauna, but also includes amphibians, reptiles and mammals.
In this subject, you will gain a systematic and basic knowledge of Norwegian vertebrates. Species knowledge is emphasized and then with a particular focus on birds. There will be a focus on key species, ecological interaction, population changes and threatened and vulnerable species. In addition, knowledge of threat factors for the Norwegian bird fauna is emphasized.

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Nature Management, Bachelor's Programme

Qualified students can get a place if there is capacity in the laboratory. Contact your study advisor.

BIO1012 Introduction to Zoology or equivalent is required.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • have basic knowledge of the species diversity of Norwegian vertebrates
  • have a particularly good knowledge of Norwegian bird fauna, with a focus on key species, threatened and vulnerable species
  • have knowledge of population variations and population changes in Norwegian bird fauna and the background for such changes
  • be familiar with the most current threat factors for the bird fauna

Skill:

  • be able to apply and convey knowledge about Norwegian vertebrates
  • Master methods for mapping selected groups

General competence:

  • be able to discuss nature management challenges related to the Norwegian bird fauna
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal. Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in laboratory exercises.
Elective course
Lectures, excursions and laboratory work.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course evaluations and study program evaluation. These evaluations are included as part of the university's quality assurance system.

Compulsory participation - 4 out of 5 excursions with follow-up work, approved/not approved. Must be approved in order to sit for the practical exam (species test).

School exam, 4 hours, counts for 50% of the grade. Assessment A-E, F=not passed. Practical test (species test), 2 hours, counts for 50% of the grade. Assessment A-E, F=not passed.

School examination: Pen, ruler and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.

Practical test (species test): All aids except reference collection.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
