Aquatic Genomics and Bioinformatics

Topics covered in this course: Fundamentals aspects of bioinformatics, basic DNA sequence analysis, multiple sequence alignments, BLAST, genome annotation, construction of phylogenetic trees, synteny analysis, and analysis of high-throughput gene expression data (RNA-sequencing).
Students enrolled on the MSc programme in Biosciences.

Requirement of 15 ECTS within the field of genetics/genomics/molecular biology.

On successful completion of the course:

Knowledge

The student should:

  • Have an overview of the main aspects of comparative and functional genomics
  • Master essential bioinformatics concepts be familiar with the appropriate bioinformatics tools
  • Have knowledge of the relevant aspects in molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Understand how genomics can be applied to address important issues in aquaculture and ecology
  • Know the principles underlying analysis of large-scale functional genomics data

Skills

The student should:

  • Have broad computational skills and be able to use various bioinformatics applications
  • Know how to analyse large DNA sequence data sets
  • Be able to predict and characterize eukaryotic genes
  • Have the expertise to interpret high-throughput functional genomics data
  • Know how to retrieve data from electronic biological databases
  • Be able to access and understand scientific literature pertaining to the field

General competence

The student should:

  • Understand and apply genomics and bioinformatics concepts to cutting-edge aquaculture research
  • Be able to discuss and present scientific papers in genomics and bioinformatics
  • Have the competence to participate in bioinformatics and genomics research projects

Block teaching. Lectures, tutorials and computer labs.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment, grading scale Letter grades

  • Oral presentation, comprises 40/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
  • Written assessment, comprises 60/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
