Introduction to Sustainable Production and Utilization of Bioresources 1

BIO5038

The course consists of an introduction to fish biology, aquaculture techniques, using Norwegian salmon farming as an example, with an insight into global, ecological and restorative aquaculture.

The course will introduce the students for a wide array of job opportunities, as PhD student or within the industry, within the area of circular bio-economy and blue growth.

The course will be organized with 2 weeks of web-based modules combined with one-week physical meeting, where all students gather at Nord university in Bodø for an intensive campus course.

The intensive campus course will comprise an excursion to visualize knowledge acquired during the online weeks about salmon farming (industry visit from broodstock to fish processing), an industry seminar, a research day to understand on-going research in the field and get to know potential master projects, an group work on a report related to food from the ocean.

For students admitted into the Nordic master in Sustainable production and utilization of marine bioresources at Nord university, Holar University or Gothenburg University.

After completing the course, the student must have obtained:

Knowledge:

After completion of the course, students will have:

  1. Advanced knowledge and understanding of the aquaculture industry globally
  2. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Norwegian aquaculture industry, its environment and its sustainable development.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of global aquaculture and food webs in the ocean

Skills:

After completion of the course, the students will:

  1. Have the ability to select relevant scientific methods for research and developmental projects and discuss their successful aspects and shortcomings.
  2. Be able to use outreach and communications tools to deliver information on scientific and social issues impacting the use and management of ocean food systems to specialists, stakeholders, the press, social media, and the general public.
  3. Be able to present the knowledge acquired both orally and in writing.

General competence:

After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  1. Competently discuss topics related to aquaculture techniques, salmon farming, global aquaculture and food from the ocean as well as sustainability.
  2. Can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in relation to the production and utilisation of marine bioresources.

In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his/her disposal.

Costs related to visits to partner universities must be expected.

Compulsory for students admitted to the MARBIO study programme.
Online (recorded or streamed) and face to face lectures and discussions, seminars and field trip.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Written assignment, grading scale Passed – Failed.
