Advanced Knowledge in Fish Nutrition

BIO9010

This course provides an update on recent advances in fish nutrition through lectures and practical exercises led by experts in various fields. Students also engage in in-depth learning about a specific topic.

Students participate in the "Fish Nutrition Workshop", which is conducted during the spring term (usually in early February) and organized by the Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences (WAS) at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Topics covered in the workshop include recent advances in fish nutrition, macro- and micronutrient requirements, current trends and future challenges in aquaculture nutrition, feed technology and formulation, and specific topics such as feed intake, digestion, and gut function. These topics may change depending on the year and the invited speakers. Practical sessions may cover feed formulation and microbiota analysis, and they may change over the years.

At Nord University (Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, FBA) students will be assigned a topic for in-depth reading topics related to the workshop theme. After the workshop students must prepare a written assignment and give an oral presentation on their assigned topic.

The applicants to this course must be enrolled as a PhD student at Nord University or other Universities/Colleges in Norway or abroad.

Knowledge

The student must have gained:

- Knowledge of current trends and future challenges in the aquafeed industry.

- Insights into the importance of nutrients, feed, and additives for ensuring good growth and health in farmed fish (macronutrients, micronutrients, and additives).

- Knowledge of feed technology and formulation.

- Knowledge of the use of novel tools to conduct research in aquaculture nutrition.Knowledge of gut functioning.

Skills:

From an academic point of view, students will learn about recent advances in fish nutrition.

Students are expected to gain basic knowledge of feed production technology and formulation.

Students are expected to be able to apply new knowledge to their own research activities related to fish nutrition.

General Competence:

Students should be able to apply knowledge acquired through this course.

- Understand the importance of nutrition (feed and feeding) for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

- Carry out further studies in aquaculture nutrition.

- Apply new knowledge to their research activities.

- Handle general discussions related to aquaculture nutrition.

Students must pay approximately NOK 10,000 to participate in the Fish Nutrition Workshop at Wageningen, which includes registration, course materials, practical classes, and lodging. Students must make their own travel arrangements well in advance of the workshop to reduce travel costs. The part of the study at FBA in Bodø or Steinkjer is at no costs.

Workshop: Lectures and practical sessions, poster presentation sessions, and active participation in seminars.

Self-studying: Assigned topic at Nord University.

Discussion at Nord University based on workshop topics

The students will evaluate the course at the end of the workshop and after the oral presentation at Nord university.

Compound assessment

OD Mandatory active participation at workshop. Grading scale: Approved / Not Approved.

OP Written report and MU oral presentation of the assigned topic. Grading scale: Passed/failed.
