Didactics - Mathematics

DID1001
Subject didactics in mathematics deals with learning, teaching and assessment in respect of mathematics. The rationale and motivation for the subject of mathematics are key. Students acquire experience in the planning and development of exploratory mathematics teaching and mathematics assignments with high cognitive requirements. Adapted tuition is a recurring theme in this subject.
This course is reserved for students who have been admitted to Educational Theory and Practice for General Subjects with Mathematics as its didactic discipline.

Knowledge

Candidates shall possess:

• in-depth knowledge of mathematics curricula for primary and secondary education

• advanced knowledge of motivation, constructivism and participation in knowledge domains

• knowledge of different forms of teaching and assessing mathematics

Skills

Candidates shall be able to:

• plan, implement, assess and justify adapted tuition in subjects based on educational objectives and local and individual requirements

• justify the subject of mathematics and its various aspects for pupils, parents and colleagues

• provide ongoing and final mathematics assessments

• use key theories relating to mathematics learning in an independent manner

• see where mathematics fits into interdisciplinary topics such as public health and life mastery, democracy and citizenship, and sustainable development

General competence

Candidates shall be able to:

• find their way around the literature on mathematical didactics, raise relevant issues, critically investigate and discuss these and develop their own professional practices

• use digital resources for adapting and varying the teaching of mathematics

• lead and motivate pupils in academic work and create a secure, inclusive learning environment for all pupils

No fees other than semester fees and course literature. It is expected that students will have customised computers, webcams and headphones with microphones. Any travel and accommodation expenses incurred in connection with sessions shall also be covered by the students.
Compulsory.
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students in course surveys. These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.
