ECO5004
This course provides students with advanced knowledge of strategic analysis as a basis for making decisions about new strategic directions, for optimising performance and securing a lasting market position.
The organisation¿s strategic direction, performance and established position in the market is continually challenged by new innovative business models as well as changes in custormers¿ needs and expectations. In order to maintain a competitive advantage in a dynamic environment, sophisticated analytical assessments to evaluate and reposition the activity is required. This course provides students with advanced knowledge of strategic analysis as a basis for making decisions about new strategic directions, for optimising performance and securing a lasting market position. The course has an interdisciplinary approach through applying selected theoretical perspectives, models and tools from the fields of strategic management, business control and public economy.
Must fulfill the requirements for admission to the two year Master of Science in Business program.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student:
Knowledge
- Has thorough knowledge of strategic analysis from an interdisciplinary perspective
- Has advanced knowledge of scientific theories, concepts and models in the field of strategic analysis
- Has knowledge of international research literature and is able to apply this to issues related to strategic analysis
- Has advanced knowledge of strategic positioning in dynamic surroundings
- Has advanced knowledge of product calculation and customer profitability analysis and their implications for pricing
- Has advanced knowledge of game theory as a tool for deriving market equilibrium for different kinds of pricing strategies
Skills
- Can evaluate and critically assess analyses, calculations and techniques conducted by others as well as by the student him/herself
- Has advanced skills in assessing the strategic direction and positioning of the organisation
- Has advanced skills in calculating product-related costs using calculations, and can apply this information to decision-making
- Can conduct advanced analysis of how optimal prices are affected by market structures and the organisation¿s targets
General competence
- Can apply theories and models to inform a business case
- Can apply relevant strategic tools for change and innovation processes to business cases
- Can conduct strategic analysis to solve practical issues and can use these analyses as a foundation for decision-making
- Can conduct and present an independent analytical work in accordance with academic communication

Mandatory
This course has a high degree of active student participation in teaching through students¿ actively participating in discussions and group work. Students work in groups to solve business cases through applying relevant tools and techniques.
The programme is evaluated accirding to the university's quality assurance system.
Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.
Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3
To accommodate this, the form of assessment will be changed from Written School examination to Take -home Examination for new exams on this course in the spring of 2020.
