Language and Literature in the English-speaking World

ENG1017

This course covers topics in English language and linguistics, literature and culture, and academic research and writing. The course treats central topics in English language and emphasizes the development of the student's language skills and usage. The literature component introduces a wide selection of literature in different genres, all placed in a critical, cultural, and didactic context. Students will learn appropriate techniques for academic research and writing within the field.

A one-week stay at the Norwegian Study Centre in York, England, is an obligatory part of this course. This presents an opportunity for in-person engagement with other Nord University English students and instructors, and for hands-on exploration of English society and culture. Students who cannot attend the trip to York will get an obligatory written assignment they have to do while the other students are in York.

No prerequisites beyond the admission requirements.

KNOWELDGE

The student has:

  • basic knowledge of language structures in English (syntax) and conventions for language use (pragmatics)
  • knowledge of how oral and written language can be integrated into meaningful activities
  • basic knowledge about theories in second language acquisition and about the psychology and social contexts of second language acquisition
  • knowledge of academic language and academic skills
  • knowledge about English language literature, the culutral context for each text, and genre conventions

SKILLS:

The student can:

  • communicate in English with precision, fluency, and coherence
  • explain the structures of the English language and how the language is used in different contexts
  • use precise and appropriate terminology in describing language, second language acquisition, and literature
  • analyze and critically evaluate historical and contemporaryt literature

GENERAL COMPETENCIES:

The student can:

  • communicate relevant academic subject matter, both orally and in writing, adapted to target group and situation
  • reflect on their own learning and development
  • understand relevant academic discourse
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply. If you decide to go to York, the cost fee for this trip is about 2500NOK.
Compulsory

Students will receive a detailed syllabus and course schedule for each semester. It is expected that all requisite texts are read in advance of each class meeting, and that students arrive prepared for active participation in class discussions and other course activities.

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, individual and group activities, and classes will be delivered online only.

Assignments not completed by the given deadline will not be graded, nor will extra tutoring be offered. Students are individually responsible to stay current on announcements, scheduled lectures, and distributed texts.

Attendance is mandatory, a concept based on the principle of joint responsibility both for one's own learning as well as that of others.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. 

OD: Mandatory participation, 80 %: Approved / Not Approved. 

York Trip / Substitute Assignment (OD) : Approved / Not Approved

AK: Obligatory assignment: Approved / Not Approved. 

Obligatory participation and assessment tasks must be approved to receive the final grade

HJ:  Written home exam in language, 6 hours,  80 % of letter grade, A-F

MU: Oral exam in literature, 20 % of letter grade, A-F
