English 1B - How English works 1
Linguistics is the study of what language is, how it is structured, how it is acquired, and how it is used in communication.
This course looks at how the English language works, and how we can use this knowledge in teaching i.e.grades 1-10.
After an overview of the basic concepts and theories for analysing English words, sentences, vocabulary, and pronunciation, we turn out attention to language acquisition and applications to English teaching in the classroom.
Enrolment in one of the study programs that includes the course, or enrolment as a single-course student.

KNOWLEDGE
- has basic knowledge of key concepts, theories, and terminology in English linguistics, including word and sentence structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, and language acquisition
- has knowledge of the Norwegian curriculum for the English school subject and relevant support materials
SKILLS
- can identify and use basic linguistic terminology to describe and analyze English words, sentences, vocabulary, and pronunciation
- can apply fundamental theories of language acquisition and structure to practical examples relevant for English teaching in primary and lower secondary school
- can find, assess, and refer to relevant information and academic material on English linguistics, and present this in a clear manner
GENERAL COMPETENCE
- can reflect on the significance of linguistic knowledge for English teaching and communicate this to others, both orally and in writing
- can work independently and with others to solve simple subject-related tasks and contribute to a positive learning environment
- shows awareness of the importance of language in communication and learning, and demonstrates responsibility in applying linguistic knowledge in educational contexts
- can use simple AI-based learning tools in a responsible and reflective manner to support their own learning and teaching of English, and demonstrates awareness of basic ethical and practical considerations when using digital and AI technologies in educational settings
Elective.
Obligatory for students that have chosen English as elective in the teacher education program or English One-Year Program, Bodø.
Lectures, group work and individual work. Active participation and cooperative learning are central. Obigatory attendance (OD) means that you must participate in at least 80% of all planned instruction and activities in the course. Obligatory attendance must be approved for the course to be registered as completed.

Composite assessment (SV). All elements must be approved/passed to receive a final grade in the course.
Compulsory attendance (OD): 80% attendance. Grading scale: Pass/Fail. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade
Work requirements (AK): Two texts: (1) English knowledge and language use, (2) English teaching in the classroom. Grading scale: Pass/Fail. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade
School examination (SK), 4 hours. Grading scale: A-E for pass, F for fail. Comprises 100/100 of the final grade.
