English 1C - Encounters with Childnen’s and Young Adult Literature 5-10

Learn how to engage and empower learners through the use of a wide selection of texts, activities and approaches for the 5-10 classroom.
Building on the course Introduction to English Didactics, this course will explore how using age-appropriate texts of diverse origin and format can accommodate students' interests and needs. In doing so, students will engage themselves with a variety of English-language literature, including multimodal texts, and consider how using this material in class can motivate learners to increase their skills and language output. The course provides a methodological basis and genre awareness for using literature to promote the aims of the curriculum, especially the interdisciplinary theme of life skills and health, and will feature activities and approaches that can be used in the 5-10 classroom.

KNOWLEDGE

  • has knowledge of texts written for young people and texts that are part of youth culture
  • has knowledge of young adult literature from the English-speaking world
  • has a historical awareness of developments in the genre leading to the present day

SKILLS

  • can critically discuss a selection of youth literature and related cultural themes
  • has expertise in how youth literature can be used to promote pupils' language learning
  • can facilitate students' learning and development in the English subject, including the interdisciplinary topic of life skills and health

Elective.

Obligatory for students that have chosen English as elective in the teacher education program.

The teacher education is a professional study in which active participation and cooperative learning are central. Obligatory attendance (OD) means that you must participate in at least 80% of all planned instruction and activities in the course. Obligatory attendance must be approved for the course to be registered as completed.

Teaching is organized as a combination of teacher-led instruction and discussion, student-led discussion and activity work, and individual readings and assignments.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound evaluation - All elements must be approved/passed to receive a final grade in the course.

Obligatory Attendance (OD) - at least 80% of all planned instruction and activities in the course. Grading scale: Approved/Not Approved. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade.

Required assignments (AK) - Two shorter assignments (one in-class presentation and one written task) connected to the course material. Grading scale: Approved/Not approved. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade.

Oral examination (MU) - app. 30 minutes, individual. Grading scale A-E for pass, F for fail. Comprises 100/100 of the grade,
