English 2A - How English works 2
This course builds on the review of the structure, acquisition and use of the English language in ENG1023 and looks at how we can use this knowledge in teaching.
The course provides more in-depth knowledge of how to analyse English sentences (syntax) and introduces meaning (semantics and pragmatics), how English varies in time and space and coexists with other languages in its environment, theories of language production and comprehension (psycholinguistics), multilingualism, and applications of these to English teaching in the classroom.
Enrolment in one of the study programs that includes the course, or enrolment as a single-course student.

KNOWLEDGE
The student:
- can demonstrate knowledge of key concepts and theories in English syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, language change, variation and contact, as well as psycholinguistics, and multilingualism
- has knowledge of the Norwegian curriculum for the English school subject and relevant support materials
SKILLS
The student:
- can describe and analyse English sentences and meanings using appropriate linguistic terminology and methods, including syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analysis
- can apply knowledge acquired throughout the course in classroom settings
- can select and adapt teaching strategies based on linguistic analysis and research to support diverse learners.
GENERAL COMPETENCE
The student:
- can reflect on and discuss the significance of the course content for English teaching, demonstrating awareness of ethical and practical considerations in educational contexts
- can collaborate with peers and independently use linguistic knowledge and skills to solve subject-related challenges and contribute to a supportive learning environment
- can demonstrate responsible and critical use of AI-based learning tools to enhance English language teaching and learning, showing awareness of basic ethical, pedagogical, and practical issues related to digital and AI technologies in education
Obligatory for students that have chosen English as elective in the teacher education program or English One-Year Program, Bodø.
Obligatory course for students in the Teacher Education program in Social Studies who choose English as their specialization
Combined assessment - all the parts below must be approved to receive a final grade in the subject.
Compulsory attendance (OD): 80% attendance. Grading scale: Pass/Fail. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade
Assessment task (AK): Two texts: (1) English knowledge and language use, (2) English teaching in the classroom. Pass/Fail. Comprises 0/100 of the final grade
Home exam (HJ), 5 days. Grading scale: A-E for pass, F for fail. Comprises 100/100 of the final grade.
