This course provides an introduction to academic writing and research in English and English didactics, as well as to the principles of reading, thinking, and writing critically about scientific research.
This course provides an introduction to academic writing and research in English and English didactics, as well as to the principles of reading, thinking, and writing critically about scientific research. It guides students step by step from developing a project idea to writing a complete project description. The course also covers argumentation techniques, structure and coherence in academic texts, elements of rhetoric, the use of sources, academic integrity, major research designs, research methods, and key scientific traditions.

Enrolment in one of the study programs that includes the course, or enrolment as a single-course student.

KNOWLEDGE

The student:

• has knowledge of how to analyze and evaluate the structure and conventions of academic writing in English and English didactics;

• has knowledge to understand, analyze, and create, with a high degree of comprehension and skill academic texts and written discourse about English and English didactics;

• has knowledge to summarize, critique, and construe, with an adequate degree of competence, scientific written texts and research articles by understanding and analyzing the schematic and thematic structures of the main thesis and differentiating between main and subordinate arguments and ideas;

• has knowledge of how to identify and apply the nature and foundations of qualitative research methods to research problems and issues pertaining to English and English didactics;

• has knowledge of how to identify and apply the nature and foundations of quantitative research methods to research problems and issues pertaining to English and English didactics;

• has knowledge of how to identify and apply the nature and foundations of mixed-methods research to problems and issues pertaining to English and English didactics.

SKILLS

The student:

• can scrutinize relevant scientific methods and methodological factors and options relevant to studying English and learning and teaching English;

• can scientifically analyze and appraise research inquiries and practical issues and problems relevant to English, English learning, English teaching, English learners, and English teachers in educational contexts;

• can design, prepare, implement, and evaluate research methods for investigating teaching English to, and learning English by, learners of different age groups with diverse linguistic backgrounds and learning needs;

• can write cohesive and coherent academic prose and written discourse in English in an appropriate style and using appropriate organization;

• can gather, integrate, and consolidate information, arguments, and ideas from relevant sources and researchers on a given research topic into a coherent and convincing argument and discussion.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student:

• can reflectively and critically think about a wide range of research methods, and research and practical problems with relevance to English and English didactics;

• can scientifically and rigorously evaluate written scholarship in research articles, book chapters, academic books, and other practical and research materials.

In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at their disposal.

Obligatory for students that have chosen English as elective in the teacher education program or English One-Year Program, Bodø.

Obligatory course for students in the Teacher Education program in Social Studies who choose English as their specialization

Lectures, group work, and individual work.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course evaluations and study program evaluation. These evaluations are included as part of the university's quality assurance system.

Combined assessment (SV) - all the parts below must be approved to receive a final grade in the subject.

Compulsory attendance (OD): Requirement of 80% attendance in all classes. Assessed as approved/not approved. Counts as 0/100 of the grade.

Portfolio (MA): Three texts: (1) critical discussion of article(s); (2) annotated bibliography; (3) research project description. Grade A-F. Counts as 100/100 of the grade.
