Experience Pedagogy

ENT104L
Are you intrested in learning about the Norwegian educational system and the political and philosophical perspectives behind it? Is knowledge something that is transmitted - or something that is a result of participation in social and cultural processes?
This course gives an introduction to the Norwegian educational system and the political and philosophical perspectives behind the system. The focus is on efforts in Norwegian schools to change the view on learning from looking on knowledge as something that can be transmitted, to something that is a result of participation in social and cultural processes, based on activity, experience and reflection. The students will take part in study visits to among others, kindergartens and schools.
Higher Education Entrance Qualification and English language proficiency.
Acceptance to the program Adventure Knowledge. The course is also offered as a single subject for international students at campus Bodø.

KNOWLEDGE

After completing and passing the course, the student will:

• Know the education structure, the Education Act, the curriculum and traditions and basic ideas in the Norwegian education system.

• Have knowledge of place-based learning as an approach to educational offerings and the so-called Experience pedagogy and Experience-based learning, and the relationship between experience, reflection and learning.

• Know outdoor learning and cultural activities, and identify examples of experiential learning in Norwegian schools.

• Know about entrepreneurship learning in school.

• Have knowledge of EU policy for experiential, informal and lifelong learning.

SKILLS

After completing and passing the course, the student will:

• Be able to analyze, describe and compare the Norwegian education system with the school system in their home country and other countries.

• Be able to take part in place- and experience-based learning activities such as study visits and excursions.

• Be able to plan and organize place- and experience-based learning activities for children.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

After completing and passing the course, the student will:

• Understand different concepts about learning and their use in the national education systems.

• Participate in discussions about the ideas behind the formation of the European and national education systems.

• Be reflective about their own learning in different contexts.

No tuition fee. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.
The course is compulsory in the semester programme Adventure Knowledge. For students who do not take the whole semester programme, it is possible to take the course as a separate course if the programme is not full.
Lectures, group-work, study visits to a Norwegian camp school, different schools and kindergartens.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Composite assessment (SV): All parts described below must be approved/passed to get a grade in the course.

Compulsory participation (OD): A minimum of 80% participation is required. Counts 0/100 of the grade.

Home exam (HJ): 4-day individual written home exam. Assessment expressions A-F, where A is the best grade and the F is not passed. Counts 100/100 of the grade
