Innovation in the Public Sector

ENT5005

Innovation in public sector can contribute to solve societal challenges such as an ageing population, plastic pollution and integration of immigrants. The goal of the course is to provide the student with updated knowledge on innovation processes in the public sector aiming at managing different types of societal challenges.

The course builds on national and international research on innovation in the public sector. Specifically, the student will acquire knowledge about drivers and barriers in innovation processes in the public sector. In addition, the student will get knowledge about strategies that can manage barriers for innovation in the public sector.

Must fulfill the requirements for admission to the two-year Master of Science in Business programme.

After the course, the student should have:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge about concepts, frameworks and theories that can be used to understand innovation processes in public sector. 
  • Knowledge about which challenges change agents and other actors within public sector may meet in innovation processes. 
  • Knowledge about strategies that can facilitate innovation processes in public sector. 
  • Knowledge of the importance of innovation in public sector in society. 

Skills: 

  • Have gained a conceptual understanding enabling the student to contribute in innovation processes in public sector. 
  • Be able to use theoretical and conceptual frameworks to analyse innovation processes in public sector.
  • Be able to support public organizations with implementing innovations. 

General competence 

  • Increased awareness of different ways the student can contribute to an innovation process in the public sector.
  • Exercise in analyzing practical issues related to public sector innovation processes. 
  • Be able to convey analysis and results from own case.
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Elective 
Lectures where the student will get an introduction to national and international research on innovation in public sector. The student will work on a case and analyse an innovation process in public sector. The student works with the case in groups, and present the work both orally at a seminar and as a written report. 
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through student evaluations. The evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.
