Innovation in the Public Sector
Innovation in the public sector can contribute to solve societal challenges such as an ageing population, plastic pollution and integration of immigrants. The goal of the course is to provide the student with updated knowledge on innovation processes in the public sector aiming at managing different types of societal challenges.
The course builds on national and international research on innovation in the public sector. Specifically, the student will acquire knowledge about drivers and barriers in innovation processes in the public sector. In addition, the student will get knowledge about strategies that can manage barriers for innovation in the public sector.
After the course, the student should have:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge about concepts, frameworks and theories that can be used to understand innovation processes in the public sector.
- Knowledge about which challenges change agents and other actors within the public sector may meet in innovation processes.
- Knowledge about strategies that can facilitate innovation processes in the public sector.
- Knowledge of the importance of innovation in the public sector in society.
Skills:
- Have gained a conceptual understanding enabling he/she to contribute in innovation processes in the public sector.
- Be able to use theoretical and conceptual frameworks to analyse innovation processes in the public sector.
- Be able to support public organizations with implementing innovations.
General competence
- Increased awareness of different ways the student can contribute to an innovation process in the public sector.
- Exercise in analyzing practical issues related to public sector innovation processes.
- Be able to convey analysis and results from own case.
Compulsory attendance.
Lectures where the student will get an introduction to national and international research on innovation in the public sector and get presented real innovation processes from public employees working with innovations. The student will work in a group to analyse a real innovation process in the public sector. The work will be presented orally.
Oral presentation of group work (passed and not passed) and 4-hour individual school exam (grade A-F).
Compulsory attendance (80 %).
