Physical Activity in Health Promotion

The course deals with theory and research related to physical activity as preventive work to promote health and participation in the general population and for a selected group in particular. Motivation, meaning, body and movement are linked to different types of theory and are thematised in relation to physical activity. Various personal and societal factors and conditions that can promote and inhibit physical activity are critically discussed and actualised in relation to everyday life, practice and/or planning work. In groups or individually, students will develop a delimited project to promote physical activity and health of persons/clients in their own organisation/workplace and write a report after its completion.

Introduction to the course

This is a course for those who wish to learn more about how physical activity promotes health at individual, group and societal levels, and where, together with fellow students, you will have the opportunity to develop a specific health-promoting project to engage relevant people at your workplace/or in society in meaningful physical activity.

Knowledge

  • has in-depth knowledge about physical activity as a preventive and health-promoting activity
  • has in-depth knowledge about different theories of motivation and sensemaking, and can relate this to physical activity and health promotion
  • has in-depth understanding of how different factors affect physical activity in a selected population and can apply this to develop professional issues

Skills

  • can analyse and critically evaluate physical activity and participation related to a selected population
  • can critically evaluate health promotion measures at individual, group and societal levels using relevant methods and tools
  • can independently develop and implement health-promoting measures for groups at different levels, institutions and organisations in society and critically evaluate the usefulness of the project

General competence

  • Can apply knowledge about physical activity as a health-promoting factor and contribute to innovation within different parts of the health services/management
  • Can apply knowledge about physical activity as a health-promoting contribution in dissemination to the general public and peers.
No fees other than semester fees and course literature
Elective course.
The teaching is organised into two 1-week sessions during the spring semester where one alternates between campus and online teaching. Various student-active teaching methods are used; lectures, seminars, group work and project work. Coursework is carried out between the sessions. An introduction to literature searches is given to students who take this as an individual course. Teaching can also be conducted digitally.
The course is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys. These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.

Coursework: development of a delimited project focusing on physical activity to promote health, related to practice. Coursework guidelines have been developed. Coursework must be approved before the final course grade can be given. Grading: approved/ not approved.

Examination: Individual written assignment (OP). The assignment describes and evaluates the ‘Physical Activity Project’. Examination guidelines have been developed. Form of assessment: A-F

Examination committee: an internal and an external examiner

Re-sit examination: Carried out in the following semester and there is an opportunity to improve the previously submitted answer.
