Friluftsliv Theory 1
Description of course
The course will increase students' awareness of, knowledge about and skills within different natural environments in the different seasons. The main focus of the course is to develop the students' personal proficiency and coaching competence, in addition to raising awareness related to a trip according to the ability principle.
Trip planning, travel advice, safety, anticipatory thinking, risk-reducing measures and good travel routines are topics closely linked to all practical trips. In addition, students gain insight into their actual acquaintance with nature and first aid.
The course consists of three mandatory trips/courses; Forest and mountain hiking, basic glacier course and canoeing on flat-water and in a river.
In addition, mandatory teaching is given in other relevant friluftsliv activities.
Coursework requirements related to the course:
- 5 days (4 nights) mandatory personal hike related to forest and mountain hiking
- 3 day (2 nights) solo trip related to forest hiking
- 5 days personal hike linked to canoeing
- 5 days self-selected friluftsliv-related practical experience.
- A written assignment related to the excursions Basic glacier course and canoeing.
The course is offered in both Bodø and Levanger, therefore there are local adaptations in relation to the implementation. Such adaptations can be, for example, friluftsliv activities with a special local connection or different implementation times for the excursions.

The programme is physically demanding, and therefore the students must be
- in good physical form
- competent in swimming, that is, be able to swim a minimum of 200m continuously
Admission to the programme of study requires Higher Education Entrance Qualifications.
Applicants who do not have Higher Education Entrance Qualifications and are 25 years of age or older may apply for admission based on their prior learning and work experience. Contact our Admission Office for more information.

- competent in swimming, that is, be able to swim a minimum of 200m continuously
Learning outcomes
After passing the course, the student shall:
Knowledge:
- have knowledge of hiking in the various nature categories forest and fields, mountains, glaciers and watercourses
- have knowledge of safety, anticipatory thinking and risk-reducing measures, especially in relation to hiking in forests and mountains, glacier hiking and canoeing
- have knowledge of the necessary equipment, including safety equipment, and use and maintenance of these related to the relevant friluftsliv activities
- have knowledge of coaching in outdoor life, leadership, and the handling of groups in relevant friluftsliv activities
Skills:
- have basic skills in outdoor life in various categories of nature and different seasons, including regard for clothing and equipment, use of map and compass, types of campfires and cooking on campfires, and various types of camps and accommodation
- be able to practise basic first aid related to friluftsliv
- be able to perform basic movement techniques on glaciers, correct use of glacier equipment and simple comrade rescue on glaciers
- master basic paddling techniques and recognize the most important formations in rivers and rapids
- demonstrate the ability to create appropriate itineraries
- be able to function as a member of a group and contribute to the group's development
General competency:
- be able to reflect on how different activities can be carried out for different types of groups in an appropriate and safe way
- have insight into the relationship between good personal proficiency, knowledge and reserves of energy, as well as the importance of this for safe friluftsliv
- be able to see knowledge and skills in context, and use the combination of these in practical situations
Costs
Semester fee and reading list.
Individual hiking and camping gear are required for hiking and overnighting in the mountains. Having a tent, primus and cooking equipment will be an advantage.

Course evaluation
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course questionnaires (a mid-term evaluation and a final evaluation). Evaluations are included as a part of the university's quality assurance system.

Mandatory participation (MP): 100% attendance on courses and excursions. Must be approved to receive a final grade in the course.
Assignment (A): 2 assignments that are assessed as approved/not approved. Must be approved to receive a final grade in the course.
CR: Coursework requirements 1-5 must be approved to gain a final grade in the course.
PR Practical experience must be approved to receive a final grade in the course.
Practical exam: Grading options: A-F.
