Practical friluftsliv 2

The course will increase students' awareness of, knowledge about and skills within different natural environments

Trip planning, travel advice, safety, risk-reducing measures and good travel routines are topics closely linked to all practical trips. In addition, students gain insight into their actual acquaintance with nature and first aid.

The course consists of four mandatory trips/courses; Winter bivouacking including skiing, sea kayaking, sailing/coastal friluftsliv and sport and trad. climbing

Coursework requirements related to the course:

  • 3 days mandatory hike related skiing
  • 3 days tour linked to kayaking
  • 15 hours training ski
  • 15 hours training climbing

Assessment tasks related to the excursions skiing and kayaking.

The admission requirement is Higher Education Entrance Qualification.

This semester package is mainly offered to exchange students from our partner universities.

Exchange students are admitted on the basis of nomination by their home institution. The student must first be nominated by their home institution before they can apply to the semester package. After the nomination is received by Nord University the student will receive information about the admission process.

Knowledge:

The student shall:

  • Have knowledge of bivouacking and skiing in the various nature categories
  • Have knowledge of safety, anticipatory thinking and risk-reducing measures, especially in relation skiing, winter bivouacking, kayaking, sailing and climbing.
  • Have knowledge of the necessary equipment, including safety equipment, and use and maintenance of these related to the relevant friluftsliv activities.
  • Have knowledge of coaching in outdoor life, leadership, and the handling of groups in relevant friluftsliv activities.

Skills:

The student shall:

  • Have skills in outdoor life in various categories of nature and different seasons, including regard for clothing and equipment, use of map and compass, types of campfires and cooking on campfires, and various types of camps and accommodation.
  • Be able to practice basic first aid related to friluftsliv.
  • Be able to build safe stations, top rope and rappel attachments suitable for climbing activities.
  • Master basic paddling techniques and rescuing in seakayaking

General competency:

The student shall:

  • Be able to reflect on how different activities can be carried out for different types of groups in an appropriate and safe way.
  • Have insight into the relationship between good personal proficiency, knowledge and reserves of energy, as well as the importance of this for safe Friluftsliv.
  • Be able to see knowledge and skills in context, and use the combination of these in practical situations

No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.

Individual hiking and camping gear are required for hiking and overnighting in the mountains

The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). Evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.

Compulsory participation 2 (OD2): Climbing course, 100% attendance, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved - Not approved.

Compulsory participation 3 (OD3): Kayaking, 100% attendance, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved - Not approved.

Compulsory participation 4 (OD4): Coastal friluftsliv-sailing, 100% attendance, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved - Not approved

Assessment task 1 (AK1): Assignment: Self-assessment on winter bivouacking and skiing, counts 0/100 toward grade; grading options: Approved - Not approved.

Assessment task 2 (AK2): Assignment: Self-assessment on kayaking, counts 0/100 toward grade; grading options: Approved - Not approved.

Assessment task 3 (AK3): Training log skiing 15 hours. Counts 0/100 toward grade; grading options: Approved - Not approved.

Assessment task 4 (AK4): Training log climbing 15 hours. Counts 0/100 toward grade; grading options: Approved - Not approved.

Oral examination* (MU1), comprises 100/100 of the grade, grade options: A-E, A = Best, F = Fail.

Oral exam

  • Compulsory participation: 100% attendance on courses and excursions. Must be approved to receive a final grade in the course.
  • Assessment tasks: 4 assessment tasks. Assessment task 1-4 must be approved to gain a final grade in the course.
  • Oral examination. Grading scale A-E for pass, F for fail
