Film and TV Production
Film and TV Production is designed to facilitate the learning of all the basic skills and theoretical framework that are necessary to create content for appropriate broadcast arenas. The course will take the student through the production process from principal photography to final delivery.
Central focus will be placed on cinematography, lighting, editing and sound production.
On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
Skills:
- Plan the strategic use of and operate cameras, lighting equipment, sound equipment, and non-linear editing systems (NLE).
- Prepare camera and lighting plans.
- Identify and operate appropriate grip equipment like track, cranes and steadicam.
- Capture useable production dialogue, backgrounds, and sound effects
- Create or capture effective music elements
- Edit picture effectively to advance the story
- Create a basic mix of sound elements to complement picture
Knowledge:
- Know the terms used in cinematography, lighting, sound, and in picture and sound editing.
- Use basic camera and framing theory, fundamental lighting principles, and the importance of proper sound acquisition.
- Create music and know music’s unique role within the production
- Use different editing styles, the flow of images or scenes, how picture and sound work together, and the complex nature of deliverables.
General Competence:
- Know the importance of visuals and sound when telling a story.
- Use digital workflow.
- Make constrained decisions and follow through
- Think a project through from conception to final delivery
- Become comfortable with the technology and allow artistry to develop
Classes will consist of lectures on theoretical material related to the relevant disciplines, including technical and aesthetic considerations, and practical demonstrations of equipment and proper usage.
Labs will consist of the practical application of theoretical principals and instructional procedures, including practice in the set-up and operation of various cameras, lighting and grip equipment, sound equipment (studio and field), and editing equipment (Premiere Pro or other NLE). Assignments will consist of various camera, lighting, editing, and sound tasks.
Lab exercises may, from time to time at the discretion of the instructors, be conducted in groups to foster discovery and collaboration. Group or individual grading will be applied to all practical mandatories in a manner consistent with the assignment structure. Paper mandatories and portfolio submissions will receive individual grades.
Relevant reading material and videos may be assigned throughout the course, to arm the students with additional insight going into the lab periods.
