The course gives an introduction to the use of maps as a practical tool and as a means of communication. The students will learn to process geographical data in geographical information system (GIS), as well as related basic statistical methods.

Admission is based on Higher Education Entrance Qualification or prior learning and work experience in accordance with applicable regulations.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge about the history of cartography and the theoretical basis for the discipline, and about cartography as an important subject within geography
  • is familiar with the special features of geographic data, use of such data and its application in communication

Skills

  • can process map data in a geographic information system (GIS) and collect data from other sources, such as tabular data, aerial photos, and satellite imagery
  • ia able to assess what are appropriate ways of presenting different types of geographic data
  • can use GIS and other tools to make maps and other graphical representations

General competence

  • has competence about of the functions of maps and visualizations in society-at-large and practical and ethical issues related to the use of maps
  • has, through own work with geographic data, developed ability to be critical towards maps and graphical representations, and has an understanding of both opportunities and challenges with cartography
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer on which GIS can be installed. Students must cover board and lodging expenses during the sessions, while eventual bus expenses in relation to excursions are paid by Nord University.
Compulsory for students at the one-year programme or bachelor programme in Geography and Spatial Planning. Elective for other students at Nord university.
The teaching mainly takes place in connection with three sessions, in the form of lectures, excursions and group work. In the periods between sessions, there is online support and students will work on handing in assignments that receive individual feedback.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
