Geography in Text, Theory and Science

GEO1123
Scientific texts are the core of all science. At the same time, it lays the foundation for the acquisition of knowledge, professional competence and skills. The course emphasizes how the history of the geography subject, its uniqueness, and the subject's place in society are illuminated through analyzes of academic texts.
Admission is based on Higher Education Entrance Qualification or prior learning and work experience in accordance with applicable regulations.

A candidate who has completed his or her qualification should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge of geography as a science and the subject's history, uniqueness and place in society
  • has knowledge of the geography subject's central theories, concepts and methods

Skills

  • is able to identify points of view, arguments and structures in different types of text
  • can apply the knowledge in academic and didactic contexts and analyze and write academic texts
  • can make use of relevant professional tools and techniques
  • can think critically about study and society-related matters

General competence

  • has insight into what characterizes academic texts, and how such texts can affect society
  • has an understanding of how the field of geography emphasises the interaction between man, society and nature
  • is able to convey key subject matter such as theories, issues and solutions both in writing, orally and through other relevant forms of expression
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer. Students must cover board and lodging expenses during the sessions. Bus expenses for eventual excursions are paid by Nord University.
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). The evaluations are part of the university’s quality assurance system.

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:
