People, Resources and Environment
GEO1131
Economic geography and population geography. The course provides insight into the challenges and consequences associated with global environmental and climate problems, resource shortages, distributional issues and demographics.
Admission is based on Higher Education Entrance Qualification or prior learning and work experience in accordance with applicable regulations.
After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- has broad knowledge about the concept of resources and challenges associated with resource shortages
- has basic knowledge about economic geography and population geography
- has knowledge about different perspectives on climate challenges and various environmental discourses related to land-use
- has knowledge about key environmental conferences related to climate, poverty and the environment.
Skills:
- can assess the most common types of spatial population statistics, forecasts and theories, and discuss these in relation to food production and global sustainability
General competence:
- has insight into how social development from the 1960s to the present day has influenced the development of environmental focus
- can discuss resource use in relation to population development, social, economic and political conditions
- has insight into different perspectives on climate challenges and can discuss these in relation to land use at different geographical levels
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is also required that students possess their own laptop. Expenses for accomodation and food during the gatherings must be covered by the students. Travel expenses to and from the gatherings must also be covered by the students.
The teaching mainly takes place in connection with two sessions, in the form of lectures, excursions and group work. In the periods between sessions, there is online support and students will work on handing in assignments that receive individual feedback.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
No prerequisite knowledge required apart from meeting admission requirements.
