GEO1142
The course gives the students an introduction to regional development and globalization. The main topics are economic globalization, industrialization, new industries, innovation and green restructuring, urban planning and development, development geography which emphasizes questions regarding poverty.
The course gives the students an introduction to regional development and globalization. Upon completion of the course the student has acquired the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
- Has knowledge of relevant concepts and theories related to economic globalization, emphasizing industrial development and new industries.
- Has knowledge of relevant concepts and theories related to innovation and green restructuring related to the UN´s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the transition to sustainability.
- Has knowledge of relevant concepts and theories related to sustainable urban planning and development.
- Has knowledge of relevant concepts and theories related to development geography, and in particular knowledge concerning poverty and how to defeat poverty on a global scale.
Skills
- Is able to use geographical knowledge to analyze and understand societal developments at a local, regional and global scale.
- Can find, evaluate and apply geographical information and disciplinary subjects in the students own research questions and projects.
- Is able to interpret and understand geographical surroundings, based on fieldtrips and excursions.
General competence
- Has knowledge of disciplinary subjects, and is able to relate the geographical knowledge to questions concerning regional development and globalization.
- Is able to implement the geographical knowledge in the students own work tasks, and be able to convey relevant theories, research questions and solutions, both in writing and orally.
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop. Expenses for accomodation and food during the gatherings, as well as travel expenses to and from the gatherings must be covered by the students.
Compulsory for students of Geography at Nord University. Elective for other students.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
