Physical Planning
GEO2005
The course provides competence in community planning and land-use/physical planning with GIS. The course builds on the course Geographic information systems (GIS) (GEO1009). We can offer the course in English for international students.
Sustainable community planning and land-use planning require the use of geographic data and the use of geographic information systems (GIS). The course provides expertise in using GIS both in general planning and to create land-use plans in accordance with the Planning and Building Act. The course also provides an introduction to regulations and standards for the implementation of land-use/physical planning in Norway and to Nordic and European planning systems.We can offer the course in English for international students.
Basic courses in geographic information systems (GIS), such as GEO1009, GEO220, or equivalent. Students must be able to read academic literature written in English.
After having completed the course the students will have acquired the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- has knowledge of spatial planning as a general and future-oriented activity
- has knowledge of spatial analyses with GIS, with physical and socioeconomic data
- has knowledge of land-use/physical planning as a process and as work with GIS in accordance with the Norwegian Planning and Building Act
- has general knowledge about physical planning and the GIS applications
- has knowledge about source data for land-use planning focusing on Norwegian standards
- has knowledge about regulations and standards applicable to digital land-use planning in Norway
Skills:
- can collect necessary data and use GIS to carry out spatial analyses for spatial planning on topics such as demographics, employment, transport, public sector activities, and commerce
- have skills in applying remote sensing data as a basis for planning
- have practical skills in planning in accordance with the Norwegian Planning and Building Act
General competence:
- can work independently and in teams with community planning and spatial planning within the framework of sustainability perspectives, and can convey such knowledge in writing and orally
In addition to semester fees, course literature, food, and accommodation at sessions, it is expected that students have their own computer on which GIS can be installed and used, despite the fact that computer equipment will also be available in the laboratories.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Cartography (GEO1042) or equivalent.
