The course includes the following main themes; the history of planning, urban theory and spatial development. We also shed light upon European and international planning and sustainable development.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- have knowledge about the history of planning and urban theory
- have knowledge about spatial development,
- have knowledge about European and international planning, sustainable development and international conventions such as the Aarhus Convention and ILO 169
- have knowledge about Norwegian urban history
- have knowledge about the logic and development conditions of smaller and medium-sized cities
Skills:
- can lead multidisciplinary work involving municipal community plans and municipal plans
- can carry out parts of the planning work within the chosen academic specialisation
- can use thematic data in planning work and in the process of establishing plan data
- can perform urban studies and spatial analyses based on socioeconomic data
General competence:
- have insight into planning from an environmental perspective and a historical perspective
- have an understanding of how the urban ideal has influenced developments in Norway
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer. Students must cover board and lodging expenses during the gatherings. Potential bus expenses for excursions are paid by Nord University.
Lectures, excursions and assignments, individually or in groups, where students work on planning questions. Teaching materials will be facilitated with online support. A significant part of the teaching is in the form of seminars, where literature and the work of individual students are presented and discussed.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Composite assessment. Students will receive a letter grade.
- Obligatory participation accounts for 0/100 of the grade and will be approved / not approved.
- It is assumed that you attend both physical meetings. Absence from a physical meeting leads to the submission of a compensatory assignment. Absence from two physical meetings means that you will not be approved for participation. Compulsory participation must be approved in order to get an overall grade in the course.
- Three assignments account for 0/100of the grade respectively. Students will receive approved/not approved.
- Must be passed before the beginning of the Home Exam.
- The home exam will take place over 4 days and account for 100/100 of the grade. Students will receive a letter grade.
