Geographic Information Handling

GEO220

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are tools for processing geographic location-based information. GIS is used as a tool in many different disciplines, linked to both private and public entities. The course provides a basic introduction to how geographic information is processed, performing data capture, what databases exist and how data and software are used to perform analyzes and present thematic maps and terrain models.

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

Nature Management, Bachelor's Programme
Geographic Information Systems

Admission is based on general competance from studies or specific competance in this area, in line with the relevant regulations.

After completing the course the student will have obtained the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

have a good understanding of the elements a GIS consists of
has in-depth knowledge of various databases, especially related to nature management and area planning
have good knowledge of different methods of collection, processing, analysis and presentation of site-based information
have good knowledge of GIS software from different suppliers and how these can be used to solve tasks
have good knowledge of which standards apply to geographic information

Skills:

can schedule and perform data collection in fields, based on GNSS, drone and handheld data collection Devices
can use GIS software from multiple software vendors, for collection, processing, analysis and presentation of geographic information

General competence:

communicate GIS academic knowledge to different target groups, both written and oral
can exchange views with others and participate in discussions on the development of good practice in the field of GIS

No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.

Compulsory. Alternatively GEO1001 and GEO1002 for exchange students.

The teaching consists mainly of lectures and exercises, as well as project work. Exercises take place in fields and at GIS lab.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment

Compulsory participation- Approved/ Not approved.
Compulsory Work- Approved/ Not approved.

The compulsory participation and work must be passed prior to submission the written examination and the portfolio assessment.

Written examination, 5 hours, comprises 60% of the grade, grading scale A-F.
Portfolio assessment, comprises 40% of the grade, grading scale A-F.

Portfolio: All aids permitted.

Written school examination: Only aids awarded are allowed to be used and pen, ruler and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.

The student should have a general good knowledge of data processing, and good skills in using a PC.

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:

GEO1001 - Geographic Information Handling 1 - 10 credits

GEO1002 - Geographic Information Handling 2 - 10 credits

GEO2011 - Geographic Information Handling - 7.5 credits

GEO2012 - Geographical Analysis - 7.5 credits

GEO1010 - Cartography and Data Collection - 5 credits
