Occupational Health and Safety

HEL6001
The course provides an introduction to Occupational Health and Safety and the Norwegian Health, Environmental and Safety legislation. The course focuses on both Health promotion and the prevention of illness, injuries and social problems. Sick leave and inclusive working conditions are also central themes. Internal control is presented as an organizational tool.
The course provides knowledge to work systematically with health, environment and safety activities. Among the main topics included in the course are: Work, working environment and the Working Environment Act, Prevention and Health promotion, The Inclusive Workplace, Organizations, management, participation and internal control regulations, Psychological and social factors in the working environment, and Physical and chemical factors in the working environment.
  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification (international students refer to NOKUTs GSU list ).
  • Language requirement
  • Bachelor degree (180 ECTS credits) or equivalent. A minimum of 1 year's work experience after graduation is required

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will:

Knowledge and understanding

  • have advanced knowledge of key issues, theories, concepts, processes and tools concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety
  • have advanced knowledge of introducing and performing Internal Control in enterprises

Skills

  • be able to explain and use the terminology of Occupational Health and Safety, and be able to communicate with others and inform others about key issues using concepts of the discipline
  • be able to analyze issues concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety, and reflect on how systematic measures can be planned, organized, implemented and maintained in conformity with requirements in the health, environmental and safety legislation

General Competence

  • be able to apply their knowledge and skills to promote efforts to improve conditions with regard to Occupational Health and Safety
  • be able to communicate about issues concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety with both specialists and the general public
  • be able to contribute to sustainable development in working life, both environmentally, socially and economically

Compulsory.
The course is organized as collection-based part-time studies over two semesters. Each session usually lasts from Monday to Thursday. The lessons consist mainly of lectures, but also of group work with presentations, seminars and assignment work. In the intermediate sessions, students can stay in touch with the university and each other using email, telephone and the learning platform Canvas, which will be used as a communication channel for messages, teaching materials and other information.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.

At the end of the second semester, a six-hour written school exam is arranged. Letter grades A-F are given. A is the best grade and E is the lowest grade for a passed exam. F is given for failing the exam. The censorship will take place in accordance with Nord University's regulations.

Two compulsory assignments must be passed for the student to be able to sit for the exam.

The exam answer must always be made by the candidate personally.
