The Bachelor's thesis in History is an individual and independent written work in which the student is treating historical sources and literature in an independent manner.

The bachelor assignment in history is an independent piece of written work in which the student is given practice in using historical sources and academic literature independently.

Students choose the theme for the assignment themselves, but the theme must be relevant for teaching at school levels grades 8-13. The subject must be approved by a dedicated supervisor with available supervision capacity.

The assignment shall be of not less than 12 and not more than 20 typed pages (line spacing 1.5, font 12). The title page, contents, footnotes and literature list come in addition. The student compiles app. 600 pages of literature, that constitute the reading in the course.

Students must follow the normal rules for the use of and reference to literature and other aids.

Students must have completed courses in history on introductory level of at least 60 studiepoeng/ECTS.

On successful completion of the course the student will have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • The student shall, in consultancy with the supervisor, chose a historical topic and be able to define a research question to be discussed and clarified in a written assignment of 12 to 20 pages.
  • The student should acquire good knowledge regarding the chosen topic.
  • The student should have a general overview of the research literature concering the chosen topic.

Abilities

  • The student should display the ability to identify literature and sources relevant to the chosen topic and the research questions of the assignment.
  • The student should make use of sources and/or research literature in a professional discussion, and demonstrate the ability to examine a historical problem orally and in writing.
  • The student should dimonstrate the capacity to treat sources in a critical and reflective manner.

General competence

  • The student should be able to access research literature and historical sources and to take an independent stance on complex professional questions.
  • The student should document this ability in a written work of 12 to 20 pages.
  • The student should demonstrate the ability to communicate academic knowledge orally and in written form.

Compulsory for the senior teacher programme

A two-hour briefing on writing the assignment will be given at the beginning of the semester.

Once the students have chosen their subjects, they will be assigned a tutor. Tutorials in the course of work on the assignment are obligatory. Students must have decided upon an approved subject and completed their first tutorial within one month of the start of the semester. At least two tutorials will be arranged during the course of their assignment but students cannot count on guidance during the last week before submission. A plan for the tutorials shall be agreed with the tutor.
