Short Stories from around From Around the World
HIS1001
This course explores the short story through a general theoretical introduction to the genre as well as a careful reading of a selection of major stories from around the world. The emphasis in this course is placed on the joy of reading great literature and the exhilaration to be found in the aesthetic experience, rather than on a limited (so-called) scientific approach to the subject. That is certainly not to suggest that the course is not rigorous; rather, without recourse to the crutch of poststructuralist elaboration, the student must engage with the stories as an artistic rather than a political expression, and attempt to discover the fundamental ways in which art works.
