Health, Injuries and Rehabilitation

IDR2003
The Health, Injuries and Rehabilitation course is a compulsory part of the Bachelor in Strength and Conditioning, and takes place during the third semester. The course may also be taken as an independent course. Through the programme of study, students will receive a general introduction to the concept of health in relation to society, and the importance of physical activity from a health perspective. Students will gain knowledge about various health and injury-related conditions that can occur in a training environment, and how coaches can prevent and treat these conditions. An introduction is also given to various rehabilitation processes.
Admission to the programme of study requires Higher Education Entrance Qualifications. Applicants who do not have Higher Education Entrance Qualifications and are 25 years of age or older may apply for admission based on their prior learning and work experience. A certificate or good conduct from the police (Childcare Certificate of Conduct) is required.

Knowledge:

Students will:

- have broad knowledge about delimited topics, theories, issues, processes, tools and methods included in the course

- possess the necessary factual knowledge concerning the areas presented in the course

- be able to identify the most common theories and methods in the course, and understand how a coach should act

- have knowledge about research and development work in the course - have knowledge about the course’s history, traditions, distinctive character and position in society

understand ethical challenges involved in the subject’s research, dissemination and practice

Skills:

Students will:

- have a broad understanding of common injuries and medical conditions related to physical activity

- be able to take measures in order to prevent and treat these conditions

- have basic knowledge about designing rehabilitation programmes

- be able to acquire new and updated knowledge

- demonstrate the ability to make informed choices, and know their own limitations 

- Adapt training in order to prevent unfortunate consequences for those who are training

- be able to reflect on their own professional practice and adjust this under supervision.

- Know their own limitations and be able to refer athletes to specialists in the field if necessary.

- be able to find, assess and refer to information and subject matter and present this in a way which highlights a specific issue

- be able to master the relevant tools, techniques and forms of expression

- assess ethical challenges in the field of practice and adjust their own practice in relation to this

- be able to practice the subject within its most important areas of application

- be able to analyse textual material from the course’s most common sources

- be able to document knowledge and work processes

General competence:

Students will:

- have insight into relevant academic and professional issues of an ethical nature

- be able to plan and carry out training and projects that apply to the course

- master applicable working methods in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines from NIF

- be able to convey key subject matter such as theories, issues and solutions in writing, orally and through other relevant forms of expression

- be able to exchange points of view and experiences with others who have a background in the subject area, and thereby contribute to the development of good practices

- have knowledge about relevant innovation and innovative processes  

No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Compulsory.
Lectures and practical trials related to the subject area.
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.

Composite assessment:

  • Written examination, 2 hours. Represents 50/100 of the grade. Grading scale A-E, Best A, Fail F.
  • Practical examination including oral questioning, 20 minutes, represents 50/100 of the grade. Grading scale A-E, Best A, Fail F.

NOTE: Spring 2022: The written school examination has been changed to home examination.

Changes are done due to the Covid-19 epidemic, in accordance with the “Provisional Regulation on a Supplement to Regulations of 28/10/2020 no. 2474 Relating to Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a consequence of the Coronavirus pandemic” - according to Section 2 Forms of assessment 1-4.

IDR2024 - Sport Injuries and Rehabilitation - 8 credits

IDR2025 - Fitness Testing and Coaching Technology - 10 credits
