Planning and Managing S & C Programmes

Exercise planning or periodization fills a number of important functions for people who work out or work as a coach/instructor. This planning takes place both in the short and long term. The students in this course learn how to make long-term plans for participants. There will be an introduction to key training variables, and one will review different training principles and groups of exercise principles, as well as what function the training principles have for people who train and do physical activity. One will look at the design of exercise plans, training cycles, and annual plans for various sports/participants. Also discussed will be how to include form-topping in various sports, and the students will be introduced to the principles of periodization for different types of training.
Admission to Bachelor in Strength & Conditioning or admission as an exchange students at Nord University.

Knowledge: The student shall - have a broad knowledge about specific themes, theories, issues, processes, equipment and methods included in the course - have the necessary factual knowledge relevant to the area and be familiar with different concepts that are important to the subject area - be able to identify differences among the most common theories and training methods within the subject - be familiar with research and development work on the subject and how to conduct quality assurance and control of training - have knowledge about the subject's history, traditions, distinctiveness and place/importance for participants at all levels - understand ethical challenges involved in the research, dissemination and practice of the subject

Skills: The student shall - be able to use professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work on practical and/or theoretical issues - be able to acquire new updated knowledge, including using technical equipment - be able to make informed choices about short and long-term training plans - be able to reflect on their own professional practice as a trainer/instructor/coach and adapt it under supervision - be able to find, assess and refer to information and subject material about training and physical activity as well as present this so that it sheds light on an issue about planning of training/physical activity. be able to master relevant equipment, techniques and styles in a manner that is understood by different groups and participants - be able to assess ethical challenges in the field of practice and adjust their own practice in relation to this - be able to practice the subject within its most important fields of application - be able to analyse textual material on training and physical activity from its most common sources - be able to document knowledge and work processes both verbally and in writing

General competence: The student shall: - have insight into relevant subject- and profession-specific ethical issues - be able to plan and implement training plans for different groups and individual participants and be able to carry out planning and documentation of training for participants at all levels and in different sports - master the working methods for training planning that apply in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines - be able to disseminate key subject material such as theories, issues and training solutions in writing, orally and through other relevant expressions - be able to exchange views and experiences on training and physical activity with others at different academic levels with backgrounds in their field of expertise and thereby contribute to the development of good training practice - be familiar with any new thinking and innovation processes as well as current planning tools

Mandatory for students taking Bachelor Strength & Conditoning
Lecture, group work and individual work with training plans.
There will be an internal evaluation of the course near the end of term. Centrally administered course evaluations are an important part of the university's quality assurance system and students are strongly encouraged to take part.

Compound assessment

  • Compulsory participation 80% in practical activites. Grading scale: Approved/not approved
  • Portfolio - 2 pieces of written work done in groupes of up to 4 students, counts 50/100 of the grade. Grading scale A-E, best: A, fail: F.
  • Oral examination - 30 minutes individual oral examination, 15 minutes presentation and 15 minutes questions. 50/100 of the grade. Grading scale A-E, best: A, fail: F.
