The role of coach and leader
Through this course, you will gain insight into what characterizes an effective and inspiring coach or leader. We explore how coaches can be central to the development of both individual athletes and teams, and how they can influence their physical, mental, and athletic competence development.
This course is ideal for those who are or wish to become a coach, sports leader, or for those who work with the development of people in other contexts. It is also relevant for students who wish to understand the psychological and pedagogical aspects of leadership and guidance
Admission to the Bachelor’s program in Training, Health, and Performance or admission as a single course student.

Knowledge:
The student should
- understand the psychological principles underlying motivation, learning, and performance development
- gain insight into leadership theories and how they can be applied in a sports context
- have broad knowledge of specific topics, theories, issues, processes, tools, and methods included in the course
- show understanding of the importance of communication in the coaching and leadership role
- have knowledge of how to get to know athletes and build good relationships
- understand the ethical challenges involved in the subject’s research, dissemination, and practice
Skills:
The student should
- be able to acquire new updated knowledge in coaching and leadership roles
- show the ability to make justified decisions about coaching and leadership in relation to different athletes and groups of athletes to promote their development
- be able to reflect on their own professional practice in relation to athletes at different stages of their development
- be able to master relevant tools, techniques, and forms of expression to communicate with athletes and other coaches/leaders
- develop their own skills as a coach/leader through a selection of practical exercises
- assess ethical challenges in the field of practice and adjust their own practice accordingly
- be able to analyze textual material from the most common sources in the subject
General Competence:
The student should
- look at how coaching is done and the importance of everyone having a coaching philosophy
- get an introduction to how theories about coaching, leadership, and coaching can be integrated into the coaching and leadership role
- master the working methods used within the coaching and leadership role
- be able to convey central subject matter such as theories, issues, and training solutions both in writing, orally, and through other relevant forms of expression to different recipients
- be able to exchange views and experiences with others at different professional levels with a background in the subject area and thereby contribute to the development of good coaching and leadership practices
- be aware of any new thinking and innovation processes
Online and collection-based course. Theoretical and practical subject.
Obligatory for students in the Bachelor of strength and conditioning.
Optional for other students.
Composite assessment - all parts must be approved/passed to receive a grade in the course.
- Mandatory participation in physical gatherings for the course (60%). Counts 0/100 of the grade. Grading rule: pass/fail.
- Work requirement 1: written assignments to be answered individually. Guidance is provided on the work. Grading rule: approved/not approved.
- Work requirement 2: oral presentation of 10 minutes. Grading rule: approved/not approved.
- Oral exam, 30 minutes, 100% of the grade. Grading rule: A-E, Best A, Fail F
