Informational and Educational Aspects of Social Media

IKT1022
The subject will build awareness of social media's informational role and its many-sided consequences. The aim of the module is to provide insight into new characteristics of social communication that developed through increased use of social media, and to relate these to learning processes as well as security challenges. The academic content focuses on the influence of social media. The subject is part of Nord University's international offer and the working languages are both Norwegian and English.

Knowledge

The student will:

  • Know theoretical perspectives on media influence
  • Have insight into various aspects of social media's impact and influence
  • Have insight into the learning potential of social media and know the pedagogical approach to network learning
  • Know the various security challenges when using social media

Skills

The student will:

  • Be able to analyze and critically assess information provided via social media
  • Be able to use social media for awareness raising activities
  • Be able to build their own personal learning network using social media
  • Be able to reflect on network learning from an educational perspective

General competence

The student will:

  • Be able to reflect on the influence of social media
  • Be able to analyze ethical dilemmas related to the use of social media
  • Be able to critically reflect on their own use of social media
  • Be able to protect themselves from security threats carried out via social media
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
