Game Based Learning

IKT1023
The aim of this course is to develop understanding of the educational qualities of computer games, and how they can be used in teaching and instructional settings to create variety and motivation for learning. Focus is on developing understanding of how game mechanics and dynamics relate to learning theory and learning contexts. Furthermore we experiment with developing our own educational games. The course is part of Nord University's international offering and the language of instruction is both Norwegian and English.

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the student will:

  • Have knowledge about educaional potential in digital games
  • Have knowledge about how simple programming language can be used for developing an educational game

Skills

Upon completion of the course the student will:

  • Be able to analyse digital games from the perspective of learning theories
  • Be able to develop a digital game with the use of a visual programming language

General competence

Upon completion of the course the student will:

  • Be able to reflect on the relations between entertainment technology and learning
  • Be able to develop digital learning resources in the form of digital games
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
