Behavioral Sciences in Sports

IVB140
IVB140 focuses primarily on social science subject areas (pedagogy, psychology, sociology and motoric areas). Primarily the course aims to provide a basic understanding of these subjects, and in addition, it will be crucial that the students can illustrate and explain some of the subjects' challenges in the context of sport. The main task is to integrate and systematize practical experience and theoretical knowledge in order to develop good action skills as a coach and educator.
Applicants for the study programme must meet the requirements for Higher Education Entrance Qualification or equivalent prior learning and work experience. See information from North University regarding admission based on prior learning and work experience. Upon admission, a valid police certificate must be submitted. Applicants are ranked according to the provisions given in regulations for admission to higher education. Admission takes place through national coordinated admission.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of central aspects of sport pedagogy that is important in the role of trainer as well as how this affects the planning and implementation of training for sports groups and individuals.
  • Knowledge of sports in an historical, cultural and social context in Norwegian society.
  • Knowledge of children's and young people's sport that is important for facilitating appropriate training and performance development.
  • Basic knowledge of development and theory of movement, as well as motoric control.
  • Knowledge of mental variables that may affect sports performance

SKILLS/GENERAL COMPETENCY

  • Has the ability to analyse various sports-related issues from a scientific perspective in pedagogy, psychology, motoric studies and sociology
  • Ability to critically and analytically evaluate good arguments and provide training recommendations based on social-scientific facts.
  • The students shall have knowledge in order to provide professional and safe guidance in efforts to utilize the body's resources and improve the body's performance in daily life and sport.
  • Can plan, implement and evaluate training for different sports groups and individuals in an appropriate and justified way.
  • Can convey knowledge and independent assessments through academic writing and oral presentations

Obligatory
On the basis of research and other scientific theory, students will, through lectures, practical teaching, case-based problem solving, group work, supervision and self-activity, achieve the learning outcomes set for the course. The course work plan defines learning activities in more detail.
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through subject questionnaires (a mid-term evaluation and a final evaluation). Evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.
