Operational Leadership, Public Security and Crisis

KL300S

The course deals with public security in terms of operational leadership and organizational response to terrorism and crisis. With the aid of theory and examples discussions are raised about fundamental operational problems in crisis situations such as coordination within and between responding organizations. Of particular interest in this context is the quality of relations of power and communication; challenges in decision-making; information exchange; sensemaking and common understanding. Other important themes are stress, organizational behaviour and leadership during crises and terror, and how operational strategies emerge during crisis.

For Spring 2020, lectures are held in campus Stjørdal.

Applicants must either fulfill one of the following criteria in order to qualify for admission to the course:
  • have a Bachelor or Cand.mag and passed exams corresponding to a minimum of 80 ECTS within the field of social science at bachelor level, including advanced courses corresponding to at least 20 ECTS. Social science research methods, Ex.phil and Ex.fak are not considered among the 80 ECTS in Social science courses. The 80 ETCS within the field of social science will have to have a minimum grade of C.
  • have a bachelor from the Norwegian Police University College or the Norwegian Defence University College with a minimum grade of C.
  • Relevant Bachelor's Degree with an average grade C or better which could qualify for admission to Master in Social Science (Norwegian version)

Knowledge:

  • Students gain knowledge about the themes raised in the course in relation to operational leadership, public security and crisis.

Skills:

  • Students will develop skills in analyzing themes and issues raised in the course

General competence:

  • Students will develop competence in discussing the course themes in relation to important issues and cases in society

The course is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system
