Production of Salmonids
MAR2032
The course will give the students insights into production cycle and choice of technology through different stages of development of salmonid farming. The main focus is on Atlantic salmon, as well as the importance of this industry for society and environment.
The student must document participation in the following courses to gain access to the course MAR2032 Production of Salmonids: MAR2030 - Water quality and water treatment in aquaculture MAR2031 - Fish Biology or equivalent.
Knowledge
- Have necessary knowledge of key biology and technology areas related to broodstock, breeding, juveniles, smolt, on-growth, harvest and processing.
- Have updated knowledge about breeding, welfare, environmental impact and sustainability of salmon farming.
- Hold knowledge of new sustainable production forms.
- Hold knowledge about features of development within salmonid farming, how technology can be utilized to solve varoius challenges the industry is facing, and also its importance for the society.
Skills
- Can explain the production process for farmed salmon through all stages of development, from roe to processing.
- Can take well-founded choices for essential equipment in different phases of the production.
- Can reflect upon how choice of technology can affect the local environment and emissions from the farms.
- Can discuss societal challenges of salmon farming related to technology, production cycle, welfare, lice, escapes, production efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
- Can discuss how the environmental footprint of Norwegian aquaculture industry can be reduced.
General competence
- Can reflects upon positive and negative aspects of the Norwegian aquaculture industry, and compare with other relevant food production.
- Have insight into academic and ethical issues in the field of salmonid farming.
- Can collect, use and refer international research-based literature for highlighting various issues in salmon farming.
- Can exchange own views and experiences with others, thereby contributing to a better academic understanding for the group as a whole.

Compulsory
Lectures, group work and discussions.
An excursion to relevant salmon farming companies is aimed to be arranged (1-2 days).
Portfolio, passed/not passed
- Students will receive two assignments to be answered in the form of a powerpoint with elaborate explanations in the "speakers note".
Written assignment, letter grade A-F, 40 %
Oral examination, letter grade, 60 %
