Fish Health and Disease

MAR2033
The course provides an introduction to the most commonly known infectious diseases in farmed fish caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in the main aquaculture species. It will focus on the characteristics of the pathogenic microorganisms, including virulence mechanisms, epidemiology, ecology and antibiotic resistance, and methods for disease prevention.

Knowledge

  • Have an overview of the most important diseases in the Norwegian aquaculture industry
  • Explain what preventive measures can be taken
  • Be able to explain what treatments can be done
  • Understand how disease organisms are transmitted and spread
  • Have basic knowledge about how the aquaculture industry combats disease

Skills

  • Identify when there is a risk of disease outbreak and take action to counteract this
  • Could implement specific and general measures to prevent disease
  • Help improve fish health at rearing facilities
  • Recognize sign when fish becomes ill

Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.

Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3

To accommodate this, the assessment form for spring 2020 is changed from oral examination to home examination (duration 14 days).
