Master's Thesis
The master’s thesis consists of a report from a piece of independent research work completed during the final year. This is a compulsory course in the master’s program of study. Students are required to complete the master's thesis in collaboration with either one or two fellow students
The work will result in a report of approximately 100 to 120 pages, in addition to the reference list and any appendices. the master thesis.The Master's thesis must be submitted in A4 format, line spacing 1.5 Times New Roman), and submitted on CANVAS. In very special cases, students may be permitted to write their master’s thesis alone. Applications requesting this must be approved. The size of the thesis can then be reduced to 80 to 100 pages, in addition to the reference list and any appendices. Data material to be used in a master's thesis must be approved by SND.
In accordance with the regulations of 2005 concerning the requirements for a master's degree from section 5 of the Ministry of Education and Research: The admission requirements for experience-based master's degrees of 90 or 120 credits are the following:
- bachelor's degree
- cand.mag.
- other degree or vocational training of a minimum 3 years in scope
- education which has been approved as being equivalent to the above mentioned degrees or educational programmes, pursuant to Section 3-5 of the Norwegian Act relating to Universities and University Colleges
Because this is an experience-based master's degree, in addition to requirements for education, at least two years of relevant vocational experience is also required. The institution stipulates what is relevant vocational experience. In this context, relevant practice is documented competence within the field of management and organisation.
In order to begin the course, all courses at master’s level (MKL110, MKL120, MKL210 and MKL220) must be passed. This applies also to all compulsory coursework requirements. The course is reserved for the students admitted to the master's programme in Knowledge Management.
After completing the course, candidates will have attained the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:
• have specialized insight within a limited area related to knowledge management
• has in-depth knowledge of scientific theory and research methods
• has in-depth knowledge of identifying and solving practice-related problems in organized activity based on the traditions of the subject area
Candidate's skills:
• can analyze and relate critically to different theories and different research methods
• can carry out independent work that meets the requirements for a master's thesis
• can communicate and justify different choices of the connection between the problem and the choice of theoretical perspective and research method
• can carry out project work based on research ethical guidelines
• can document and present findings from an investigation in a scientific manner
General competence
The candidate:
• can use scientific theories and social science methods at a high level in the implementation of development projects
• can analyze and produce data material, whether it has been collected by others or oneself
• can communicate practical matters related to the research process
• can apply methodological knowledge to be able to make well-founded choices in project work
• can convey extensive independent work and master the subject's forms of expression
• can communicate about professional issues, analyzes and conclusions within the subject area, both with specialists and to the general public
Final assessment:
- Master's thesis, group, grading scale A-F, counts for 100%
Group (2-3 students). Scope of 100-120 pages. Time period: autumn of the final year. Two examiners, of which at least one is an external examiner.
An individual oral hearing will be held following the submission of the assignment. A grade is given to the task, which may be adjusted on the basis of the oral hearing. The thesis must be assessed to be passed before an oral hearing is held.
