Sami Music and Cultural Studies

MUS1070
Sami music and cultural knowledge will include a practical introduction to joik, and will provide knowledge about the Southern Sami culture.
The course will contain a practical introduction to joik (Sami chanting) in which the students become familiar with the tradition’s distinctive features. Based on this background, the focus will be on how the students can use their knowledge in both their own music making and in different communication contexts. The teaching will be organised as a two-day intensive introductory course and will be followed up with some individual additional tutoring. The student will be assigned a task in which they will be asked to use the topic of Sami music in other courses (practice, interaction, composition/arranging or instrumental work). The results will form part of a portfolio that will form the basis of assessment. Nord University has been given national responsibility for the Southern and Lule Sami languages and culture and the course will have a natural focus on this part of Sami culture.
