Business Process Management

The course offers a master level introduction to Business Process Management (BPM) and Enterprise Architecture (EA). This comprises descriptions of goals, structure and behaviour of the enterprise processes (activities) that make up the value production system, seen from different stakeholders. The descriptions also include information systems, personnel, and organizational units - linked to the goals and course of the enterprise. The course will offer students knowledge about how BPM and EA can be used to provide a holistic view on relations between strategies, operational issues, person related processes, and the technological platform.

Knowledge:

  • Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have developed a thorough understanding of what Business Process Management and Enterprise Architecture is, methods to document architectures and fundamental principles for using BPM and EA to support governance and change of enterprises. Students should also understand how ICT-based services could be used to support business processes. Students will through work with cases and a practical project be able to demontrate knowledge on how to apply theory at an advanced beginner¿s level, and should be able to reflect over their projects.

Skills:

Students will be able to

  • Develop and communicate a holistic understanding of the enterprise
  • Master central concepts, problems and uses of business processes and EA
  • Develop enterprise business models, including how to make strategy operational by developing / improving enterprise processes, information, architectural design and organization
  • Develop descriptions of enterprise architectures, including business process architectures, on various levels of detail
  • Understand how business processes and information systems are linked
  • Develop plans for business process governance and change
  • Understand international standards and frameworks for EA, and assess which frameworks to choose

General competence

  • Students will be able to assess approaches to Enterprise Architecture in order to align corporate strategy and the IT services platform.

Elective
Lectures, seminars, cases, presentations by students, guest lecturers, group guidance. To be able to pariticipate in the oral exam, the assignemnt must first be completed successfully.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.
