The course provides a general introduction to basic concepts and theoretical directions in the study of organization and leadership. Emphasis is placed on organizational history, from classical to recent organizational theory. The course addresses key organizational concepts and issues such as structure, culture, environment, change, learning, decisions and leadership.

The course addresses key organizational concepts and issues such as structure, culture, environment, change, learning, decisions and leadership. During the course, each student must present and discuss and selected text.
Higher Education Entrance Qualification
Upon completion of the course the student should have acquired the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The student:
- can account for the history, traditions and uniqueness of organizational theory.
- can explain concepts and different theoretical directions in the study of organizations
- is familiar with key concepts and issues around topics such as structure, culture, environment, learning and change
- knows of research and development work within organizational theory
- has a basic understanding of decision-making processes and different management/leadership theories
Skills
The student must be able to:
- explain concepts and different theories in the study of organizations
- identify and understand important features of organizations
- use different theories and relevant results from research and development work in analysis of organizations
- formulate practical and theoretical issues within organizational theory
- use organizational terms to formulate current social issues
General competence
The student must:
- have insight into relevant academic and research ethics issues
- be able to communicate central organizational subject matter such as theories, issues and solutions orally and in writing
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop.
Compulsory course for the one year programme in Human Resource Management. Elective course for other students at Nord University.
Lectures and seminars, group work/discussions, student presentations.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys. The evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.
