Norwegian Politics and Norway Internationally

The course presents basic concepts in the study of public policy, and provides a basic introduction to the Norwegian political and administrative management system. The structure and functioning of the political and administrative management system at national, regional and local levels are described. In addition, the course has an emphasis on Norwegian interests and how Norwegian policymaking is impacted by international organizations and agreements, in particular NATO, the UN, and Norway’s relationship to the EU.

The course presents the basic concepts in the study of public policy, also providing a basic introduction to Norwegian political and administrative management, as well as the processes through which political decisions are made and implemented. The structure of political and administrative management at national, regional and local level is described.

This course covers the key elements of management systems, such as politics, democracy, power and national interests. The parliamentary system in Norway is also central in this course, which further has a focus on elections, voter opinions, political parties and political cleavages. In addition, students get an introduction of the composition of the Storting and government, and how political decisions are made and implemented.

The course attends to how Norwegian political issue areas and interests, and how international cooperation, international organizations and agreements provide constraints and guidelines for Norwegian domestic and foreign policy.

Admission on the basis of general study competence or prior learning in accordance with current rules.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of the political and administrative government at national, regional and local levels
Demonstrate knowledge about how public policy is made and implemented
Demonstrate knowledge about Norway’s relationship to the EU and Norwegian foreign policy

Skills

Explain the basic concepts in the study of public policy and administration
Explain central Norwegian political issue areas and how Norwegian interests are promoted internationally
Assess the significance of international cooperation and agreements for Norwegian domestic and foreign policy

General competence

Apply scientific knowledge in the discussion of the political management systems in Norway, central Norwegian political issues, and how Norwegian policymaking and interests are impacted by international organizations and agreements

No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.

Compulsory for Bachelor in International Relations, and students at the One-Year-program in International relations For students on other programmes, the course is elective.

Lectures and seminars.

Annual evaluations which are included in the university´s quality assurance system.

Individual assessment task - paper - 4-5 pages - approved/not approved - The assessment task has to be approved before attending written school exam. If the assessment task is not approved, the student has the opportunity to submit a revised version.
Written school exam - 4 hours - grades A-F
